TOP 10 COLORS FOR SPRING 2010
My favorite holiday of the year has finally arrived: FASHION WEEK!!!! I’ll be covering all the shows from your fave designers this week (not to mention the sick parties I’ll be attending), and to kick things off check out the top 10 colors used in the Spring 2010 shows.
This morning’s WWD released the Pantone Color Institute’s list of the most popular colors designers chose for their new collections. They are fresh, new, and all universally flattering since designers are still being cautious about taking huge risks in the midst of this recession.
13.77% of designers opted for VIOLET PANTONE, a breezy purple hue. Not surprising, since purple reigned in the Fall collections, so a lighter version of the shade has great potential for Spring. See Purple Formal Dresses .
In at number 2, with 13.17% of designers choosing it, is AURORA PANTONE. Yellow has always been a huge shade for spring, and look for this one on yellow formal dresses mixed and matched with contrasting shades.
TURQUOISE PANTONE was chosen by 12.57% of designers for its bold, optimistic feeling. Peter Som, who used this hue in his collection, said it reflected “the need for a happy mood.” And hey, if you can’t afford a tropical vacation this spring, take solace in this cool Caribbean blue formal dresses.
11.37% of designers chose FUSION CORAL PANTONE because of the popularity of its cousin, orange. In keeping with the idea of playing it safe, designers opted for this more subdued shade instead of a bolder orange. See Orange Evening Dresses.
TOMATO PUREE PANTONE came in at number 5, with 10.18% of designers using it. Expect to see this subtle red hue in several shows, including Tia Cibani for Ports 1961, Badgley Mischka and Rebecca Taylor. See Red Formal Dresses .
TUSCANY PANTONE was chosen by 8.98% of designers. Every collection has to have a few neutrals, and I love this safari inspired one. This lighter, softer brown was used by Catherine Malandrino and Nanette Lepore. See Brown Formal Dresses.
AMPARO BLUE PANTONE was a close second to Tuscany, being chosen by 8.38% of designers for its soft, purple undertones, which make it more unique than the average blue. Look for it at Tommy Hilfiger and Adrienne Vittadini
I’m already in love with PINK CHAMPAGNE PANTONE, and have yet to see it on an article of clothing. 7.78% of designers chose this soft romantic pink, and I can’t wait to see it flouncy skirts and Pink Formal Dresses.
Keeping with the safari inspired neutral Tuscany, DRIED HERB PANTONE is another popular neutral, with 7.21% of designers choosing it for their collections.
EUCALYPTUS PANTONE was chosen by 6.59% of designers, as it is another classic neutral. Every wardrobe needs a few grey pieces, and this shade will look great when paired with almost any other color. Pantone is predicting it will be mostly used on accessories.
I’ll keep you posted on which shows these colors pop up in during Fashion Week, and of course, all the hottest trends from the runways!

Choosing an Evening Dress
Finding the perfect party dress isn’t easy. Here’s our guide to choosing the right dress for the occasion and for your shape.
Types of evening dresses
- A-line – Has no defined waistline, flows from the bust to the floor, it flatters any figure, hides big hips, it also adds curves to straight shape. This style dress makes you look taller and thinner.
- Empire – A high waistline that starts just under the bust and defined by a seam. This style creates an illusion of length for slender or petite figures and hides a thick waist or bottom.
- Sheath – Straight and fitted.
- Princess- A fitted shaped defined by vertical seams.
Color that suits your skin tone:
- Dark skin: you can dare to wear the lightest shades in the spectrum: white Evening Dresses, yellow Evening Dresses, green Evening Dresses, blue Evening Dresses , purple Evening Dresses and pink Evening Dresses will suit you well. Avoid wearing Brown and black Evening Dresses they’ll make you fade into the background.
-Cool skin tone: avoid white and yellow Evening Dresses which don’t enhance porcelain skin. They look best in earth colors like red, brown, etc
Your body shape
- For pear shape we recommend a dress with a fitted top and full or a-line skirt. Or if you are comfortable with your larger behind go for something a bit more form fitting. You should always accent what you like about your body; it is not about hiding what you don’t.
- If you have a rectangle/banana shape the illusion of curves can be achieved by drawing attention to your bust line, waist line, or a dress that bells out. Try dresses that draw attention to your waist such as a wrap dress or one with a belt. Also, you may go for a straight cut with original little spaghetti straps to attract attention to the curves of your bust. Empire lines suit you perfectly, and length (think ankle length) will make you look glam.
- If you have an hourglass shape consider yourself lucky! You have a naturally well proportioned body with means you don’t need to disguise any thing. Almost every style will flatter your figure. Have fun with it!
- For an apple shaped body a dress with an empire waist will help draw attention to your middle. Also a higher waist line means the dress may not be as tight in your problem area. If you have nice athletic legs, you might try to show them off by wearing a shorter dress.
- If you have big bust go for square-necked, low-cut dresses with short sleeves that puff at the shoulders to flatter your arms. If you go for a strappy dress, get very thin straps that make your chest look smaller.
- If you have tummy then Satin and silk are out, as they show up any lumps and bumps. Go for flared or empire-line dresses. Avoid anything fitted at the waist, which will only make your stomach or love handles stand out. Cheat with a body shaper under your dress or wear a wide belt loose at the front so that the sides hide your round bits.
Tips
2009 fashion colours are: Purple, Yellow, Green, Orange, Turquoise, White and Black .I like orange evening dresses ,but I think I don’t fit .
- The smaller your chest, the lower your neckline should be, both front and back.
- Dark colours make you look thinner.
- Neutral colours and vertical lines in the fabric or pattern will make you seem taller and lender
- Long straight dresses make you look slimmer.
- A monochromic dress elongates the body.
